Ba_team_picture-players_only_large

The Melrose Youth Hockey Bantam A team took home the Massachusetts Hockey Tier II-S State Championship with an exciting come-from-behind win over SMS at the Valley Forum in Haverhill on Sunday, March 21.  Eric Mercer scored on a power play with less than three minutes to go in regulation to give Melrose a lead they would not relinquish.  Conlin Healy tied the game with a brilliant shorthanded goal earlier in the final period.  Joe Taglieri was in his usual tournament mode making some big saves down the stretch as SMS buzzed the Melrose net in a last ditch effort to get the equalizer.

Congratulations to Coach Dave Taglieri, Coach John Mercer, Team Manager Laurie McGuire and all the players and parents of the MYH Bantam A team...2009-2010 Massachusetts Hockey State Champions!!!

Melrose Youth Hockey Squirt A Team Reaches Final Destination

Have you every heard the saying "Winners Never Quit and Quitters Never Win"? That conviction is the engine that drove the Melrose Squirt A team to victory. The members of MYH's 2010 Squirt A team never stopped believing that they could be Champions!

This year’s Squirt A's struggled during the regular Valley Hockey League season, landing a mark more often than not in the loss column for the team. Although in every game, many victories were swept away from the team during the final period of the game. But despite these losses, these young players left the locker room after each game with smiles on their faces and heads held high. The regular season ended with Melrose seeded in last place in the VHL Blue North American Conference.

But the "little engine that could" kept moving on. After months of hard work, the team began to believe in themselves and each other. They remained focused and determined to reach the VHL Blue North American Championship with a "We Think We Can, We Think We Can!" mindset.

This attitude paid off for the Squirt A’s during the VHL play-offs. The "little engine that could" left the station with a nail-biter on Monday April 5, 2010, eliminating Medford with a 3-2 upset in overtime. This victory added power to the "little engine that could" as the team moved on to the semi-final round. On Thursday April 8, 2010, the Squirt A team earned their spot in the VHL championship round with an impressive 10-3 victory over rival and second seed Wakefield. More power was added to the little engine with this win and the train moved on. A hard fought 5-2 win over number one seed Lexington/Bedford on Saturday April 10, 2010 advanced Melrose to the top of the steep hill as play-off Champions of the VHL Blue North American Conference. The "little team that could" enjoyed a very proud moment at the top.

Carrying home the VHL trophy was a magnificent season-end for a very determined young team! There were no passengers on this train; everyone on the team contributed to keeping the engine moving onward. Hats off to the "We Think We Can, We Think We Can" engineers: Jack Burke, Matt Campagna, Shea Champagne, Shane Correale, Justin Crowley, Drew DiFraia, Rachel DiFraia, Derek DiRaffaele, Jeffrey Eaton, Zak Farrell, Michael Joyce, Jillian Mercer, Michael Saracco, Corbin White, and David Witkowski - a job well done! Kudos are due as well to the committed coaching staff that kept fine-tuning that engine: Coach Bill Allan, Assistant Coach Billy Allan, Assistant Coach Steve Champagne, and Assistant Coach Wayne Eaton.

If you think you can, you will - with effort and determination. Congratulations Melrose Youth Hockey Squirt A Team, you’ve reached your final destination!
